Why should you change up your skincare routine? If it’s not broken don’t fix it right? In this case, wrong. With summer right at our fingertips switching up our skincare routine is an important step in maintaining healthy skin. Due to environmental and weather changes it’s essential to think about how this affects our skin. I know personally, I tend to break out more when I go upstate for college compared to living in New York City. All of the little things like precipitation, altitude, and overall weather are crucial factors that we should think about.
First things first you should know a little bit more about my skin to understand where i’m coming from. I’ve struggled with acne for about six years now and haven’t been able to maintain it until recently. I’ve been using Clindamycin wipes prescribed by my doctor which have been my knight in shining armor when it comes to my war with acne. I have moderately dry skin that’s worsened due to topical creams and acne solutions. I also have acne scars that I’ve been trying to lighten up. My pores are medium sized and primarily noticeable around my nose. During the summer my skin doesn’t get too oily, and is pretty good in terms of acne, which I really appreciate.
Now that you’re up to speed on my skin type, here are my recommendations for how to change your skincare routine for summer.
Say Bye Bye To Your Oil Based Cleanser
Since we’re not battling against the dry winter air we can take a breather on hydrating our face and leave that to our moisturizers and serums. Having key ingredients that hydrate your skin is important when it comes to cleansing but shouldn’t be your primary focus. I recommend the Joanna Vargas Miracle Bar Soap – this stuff is magical and it’s great for all skin types. At first I was hesitant to use a soap bar since I was told soap bars are more open to bacteria but to my surprise this is the only cleanser that I actually feel gets deep down in there. It has activated charcoal so it draws out all the nasties out of your skin but still has hydrating ingredients such as bamboo powder and Shea butter.
Lose The Thick Moisturizer
When it starts to get colder I instantly gravitate towards my First Aid Beauty Repair Cream Intense Hydration and let me tell you that product is thiccc. Having such a heavy moisturizer during the summer can feel overbearing. Since the sun will be beaming down on you make sure your moisturizer has at least SPF 35. People often think sunscreen will leave their skin feeling greasy and oily but a great moisturizer to use is Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen. If I had to compare it to another product I would say the texture is similar to Benefit’s Porefessional Primer, the Unseen Sunscreen leaves my skin with a matte finish. I’m not a huge fan of the way it smells but it does protect my skin and leave it less shiny so i’m not complaining!
My other recommendation would be to go for the Priming Moisturizer by Glossier. it’s incredibly lightweight and it leaves your skin dewy and fresh and calms redness down.

Slow Down The Exfoliation

Exfoliating is great. You scrub off all the dead skin cells and have healthy glowing skin. But it’s also major to remember that our skin is more sensitive to sun damage than it is in the winter. Which is why you should slow down on the scrubs and exfoliate 2-3 times a week. Instead of using an exfoliating cleanser switch to an exfoliating mask. The Joanna Vargas Exfoliating Mask will literally have your skin glowing. The mask has everything you need to draw out impurities, lighten and brighten, and break down all the dead skin cells on your face. Some exfoliates have left my skin feeling dry and irritated, what’s great about the Exfoliating Mask is it’s super gentle and hydrating.
Switch Up Your Serums
I swapped my Rose Hip Seed Oil by The Ordinary for the Joanna Vargas Daily Serum and feel so refreshed. Trying something new for your skin might be a little scary but changing it every so often can help replenish your skin. The daily serum is a great way for me to even out my skin. I’ve never used a green serum before so I was excited to give it a try. What it does oxygenate, hydrate, and give your skin the vitamins it craves. Packed with ingredients like chlorophyll, oat grass juice, and vitamins A, C, E, my skin has been loving the green juice.
I’ve noticed my skin is less red and is becoming balanced in terms of it’s tone. Which translates into how easy makeup application has been. The more balanced and even my skin is the better my makeup applies! This is on the pricier side of my skin care regimen but don’t worry cause I have a promotional code for you, that can save you some serious bucks!
Switching out your skin care products and creating a new regimen should be done as needed. Your skin might being telling you something about your hormone and stress levels. Personally, when I come home for the summer I’m a lot calmer and less stressed compared to during the semester. What works for me may not work for you so it’s important to think about the ingredients and what might irritate your skin. If it’s one thing you get out of this post make sure you WEAR SUNSCREEN!
